Ten Steps to Prepare for Earthquakes
  1. Secure appliances. Make sure heavy appliances, such as water heaters, stoves, washers and dryers, are secured to studs in your walls. This prevents them from falling or bouncing and breaking electrical or gas connections.
  2. Latch cupboards. Put latches on cupboard doors so they don't swing open and increase dishware breakage. Place heavy items on lower shelves so they don't fly out onto your head.
  3. Affix hanging items on walls and ceilings. Light fixtures, paintings, mirrors and clocks can fall during an earthquake unless they are bolted down.
  4. Utility shut-off. Know where your electricity and gas shut-off valves are and how to turn them off if needed.
  5. Know safe areas. Discuss with your family where to go during an earthquake. If you can stay on your feet, an inner hallway is generally the safest place in a home. Kitchens and garages are the least safe.
  6. Have options. If you can't get to a hallway, get under a strong table or desk for some protection.
  7. Identify exits. Make sure your family knows how to get out of the house if doors are blocked.
  8. Set a meeting place. Establish a place to meet if an earthquake occurs when family members are at work or school.
  9. Food and water. Always keep a supply of non-perishable foods (canned foods and milk, plus packaged snacks) for your family and pets. Plan on one gallon of water per person in your family per day for seven days.
  10. Medical and other supplies. Make sure you have extra prescription drugs available. Also have on hand a portable radio, extra batteries, flashlights, fire extinguishers and a first aid kit.
